Since I was so negative about the Red Cross the other day I thought I
would provides some alternatives for those of your who want to help.
Here is a list compiled by someone else, someone I have known for
several years, btw. "Locally" means Cincinnati here.

I received a call from John Billings, minister at the Kemper Road
Swedenborgian Chruch in Montgomery, a church we have attended from
time to time. John said that they had an offer from General
Electric that any donations they turned in through one of their
members, friends of mine, will be matched dollar for dollar from
GE. So if you have money to donate and aren't a big fan of the Red
Cross, as we aren't, here is the opportunity to double the dollars
sent.

You can send your donations and make out your check to the Kemper
Road Swedenborgian Church, 9035 E. Kemper Road, Montgomery, Ohio
45249. Please note on the check memo that the money is for the
Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund so that it gets to the right fund for
the GE matching funds. If you'd like more information you can phone
John Billings at 513-248-0636.

The Salvation Army is, as usual, on the spot in New Orleans, Biloxi,
and other affected cities, giving away food, clothing, water, and
whatever else is needed, all for free, with no strings attached.
This is another good organization to which you can donate for this
tragic event. Phone your local Salvation Army to find out where to
send checks or visit their web site where they have online donation
capacity: http://www.salvationarmyusa.org/

Locally you can also contact the folks at Matthew 25. They are
collecting money and hard goods, like cases of bottled water,
blankets, canned goods, and cleaning supplies, all the things that
will be needed as New Orleans begins to clean up. Donations can be
brought to Matthew 25 Ministries office, 11060 Kenwood Rd., Blue
Ash, OH 45242, 513-793-6256, of fax 513-793-6258, e-mail
[EMAIL PROTECTED] Visit their web site for directions:
http://www.m25m.org/main/index.htm
They are also happy to accept volunteers who have time to donate to
help take in donations, answer phones, and load their trucks.

I also received an e-mail from the home office of U. S. Servas, the
world peace traveler and host organization to which we have belonged
for more than 25 years, that they are looking for folks, old and new
host members, willing to open their homes to evacuees from New
Orleans. Many have no homes to return to, and those who do will not
be able to return for some time, possibly weeks, since there is no
electricity and no water or sewage available throughout the city.
If anyone is interested in this program please get in touch with me
and I will send you the information. Or you can contact: United
States Servas, Inc., 11 John Street, Room 505, New York, NY 10038,
212/267-0252, of fax 212/267-0292, U. S. Servas is a non-profit
membership organization that fosters understanding of cultural
diversity through a global person-to-person network promoting a more
just and peaceful world. You can become a host for a suggested
donation of $40/year, or whatever you feel like donating. For more
on U. S. Servas go to: http://www.usservas.org

Since the majority of those who are suffering from this natural
disaster are the poorest of those from the afflicted areas, these
are all good opportunities to really help those who need help most.
