Mayor Ray Nagin's voice cracked with anger and anguish Thursday night
in an interview with New Orleans radio station WWL-AM. (Hear the mayor
tell feds to 'get off their asses' -- 12:09.)

"We're getting reports and calls that [are] breaking my heart from
people saying, 'I've been in my attic. I can't take it anymore. The
water is up to my neck. I don't think I can hold out.' And that's
happening as we speak." (Transcript of radio interview with Nagin)

Nagin said the time has long passed for federal authorities to act on
their promises.

"You mean to tell me that a place where you probably have thousands of
people that have died and thousands more that are dying every day,
that we can't figure out a way to authorize the resources that we
need? Come on man," he said.

"I need reinforcements," he pleaded. "I need troops, man. I need 500
buses, man. This is a national disaster. (Hear Nagin's angry demand
for more troops -- 1:00)

The Mayor is saying quite clearly that Bush is f***king up, that they
do not have the resources that they need, he is saying that the
Resources to deal with this has not been released.

He is saying that he told the authorities, that NO was begging for the
resources and the infrastructure to deal with a situation such as
this, including Homeland security.

He is basically saying that the entire situation has been FUBAR.

The rest of the world is looking at the racial composition of hte
victims, and are saying that its poor black people dying
predominantly, and that's why the US isn't acting more quickly. Might
be completely incorrect, but people are now trying to find all sorts
of reasons why this disaster has gotten so far out of control in the
US.

The Mayor said that while there are knuckleheads out there, a majority
of people looting are trying to find food and are desperate. He says
that the knuckleheads are a small percentage of the people, and he
says that its amazing that people are focusing on that.

He is also saying that NO had a HUGE drug problem, and a lot of people
are walking around totally whacked up for a fix. He says that crazy,
drug starved addicts are running around wreaking havoc because they
need a fix. Breaking into hospitals, into drug stores,
pharmacies..looking for something to take the edge off.

It sounds like complete madness!

He also says that the Feds statements that it needs some sort of
Formal invitation for federal help, and the Mayor says that's total
BS. And points out did Iraq ask for help, did the Tsunami victims have
to give a special invitation.

He says after 9/11 we gave the president unprecedented powers, and he
says that a place so unique, a place where most of your oil is flowing
through. A place where you have htousands of people that have died,
and thousands more dying any day, that the President can't deliver the
resources?

More people have died in this tragedy than in 9/11.
Does anyone realise that? More people have died in this tragedy ,
horrific deaths..than in 9/11.

I wouldn't be surprised if this Mayor loses his job, maybe loses more
than that. But he said what needed to be said. He says that 40,000
people have NOT come into NO, and that this is one of the biggest
crises in the history of the country.

I respect that Mayor. He said what needed to be said, he said what hte
rest of the world is saying looking in at this tragedy. People are
dying every minute in New Orleans..drowning in their attics, in their
homes, on their rooftops. Dying of lack of water, lack of
food..babies...it's horrible.

It's....a stunning disaster 0_0.

It's so poignant, so real and for someone living in this hemisphere
...so very very close.
New orleans is a 3 or 4 hour flight from Trinidad.

After hearing that Mayor's speech..I almost feel liek crying for those people.

I hope Americans don't let the people in charge talk their way out of this.
