Some folks had asked about the animals in New Orleans, and I said I'd post
whenever I heard back from my animal keeper friend. Well, she finally got
through via satellite phone last night. There are 4 people holed up at the
Species Survival Center. They're being very quiet about it and have not left
the compound, for fear of what's going on "outside." They have generators
and food and water. They're getting another load of supplies on Tuesday via
helicopter. The zoo appears to be okay, with no loss of life reported. The
aquarium might be a mess, as it's believed that they lost power, and as
such, many of the tanks may have gotten too cold or too hot or lost oxygen
levels. But, there's no definitive word yet. Megan lost 2 cranes in the
hurricane. Another one is sick right now, and there's no vet treatment
available. So, all they can do at this point is to try to make her
comfortable.

Overall, she seemed in great spirits. She said she and the others that are
there are just focused on taking care of the animals and settling in to live
there as long as is necessary. And, that's the update. :)
