Thanks for the feedback everyone. I was wondering if I was looking at it
wrong because I was bent out of shape.
 To answer these questions:
No, deportation is not in the cards. I am still legal. I would simple be
hard put to prove it. Theoretically I am supposed to carry the green card at
all times, but I never do, as I look and sound American and nobody has ever
stopped me in the street and asked me for it.
On the other hand I am totally SOL if I want to:
Travel to Canada or Mexico or even South Texas or southern New Mexico. I
did once go to Canada without my green card but that was a family emergency.
It would require me to assume the Homeland Security people can find me in
their computer and that I am dealing with one of the more rational agents.
I do not know if I can replace the driver's license.
I do not know what this does to my citizenship application. I am required
to have a valid green card, but I am not sure if this means physically in my
possession. I know that at some point I am supposed to surrender it...
I cannot get a job, should I want to . (I'm self-employed at the moment.)
I am not sure if I will be able to pick up my student loan check.
There are a host of bureaucracies that require me to produce the alien
registration card periodically....

Costs - hmmm. Last I looked it was $90 for a replacement card. The two years
is for the replacement card. New Mexico driver's license is $80 or $90. I
have not yet tried to quantify the costs of the above.
As for your advice, thanks. Yes, I will at a miniumum be talking to the
owner. It's a local chain. I am considering suing. I dislike litigation but
this might be a case for it.
