Part of it is also an independence movement... A majority of Catholics happen 
to support an independent Northern Ireland, while a majority of Protestants 
happen to either side with the British or support a unified Ireland.

Hate isn't the only issue here.

The initial cause may have been religion, but I think it's now just
hate.  In situations like these people get to a point where everyone's
born into it and so indoctrinated into the culture of hate that they
no longer care about the initial reasons they were fighting.
