I was sent to the Principal's office often for not saying the pledge
correctly. Even just skipping the words "Under God" was enough to get
sent to the office.

Refusing to say it at all was grounds for losing recess privileges as well.

(Connecticut AND Virginia, 1974-1977ish)

And these were not particularly religiously strict areas.
