Nick, I've heard that some people who travel internationally many
times a year do 1 of 3 things:

1.) Pack a layer of clothes, then a layer of bottles (separate them
with clothes), then a layer of clothes. Make sure it's in a
rollaboard because it can get heavy. delare nothing.

2.) buy an extra rollaboard there and pack it with your souvenirs.
Throw in some clothes (if you didn't buy any) to at least try to make
it look ok. Remember customs has nothing to do with x-ray or
security. declare nothing.

3.) Buy a case or 10 of your favorite wine/whiskey/beer and FedEx it
to yourself.

Packing Tips -
We NEVER check luggage, ever, never. And we never take no more than
we can walk 3 miles with.

For us this means a max 20" rollaboard and a small carry on size day
pack. Something that can carry snacks, tunes, books, etc, and a purse
for your wife.

I favor a High Sierra combo backpack/rollabord. It comes with a day
pack that zips on and the rollaboard has backpack straps too. I've
been to Europe and Asia with it and it's never let me down.

Pack no more 3 days of clothes. Here's how I do it:
1.) A "nice" outfit I wear on the plane. I have wrinkle-proof sport
coats that'll go in the overhead and many suits can be as well (Zegna
makes a nice one that's 100% wool). For your trip I'd just bring a
sport coat in case you want to eat at a nice place and then wear a
button down shirt with Kakhis. Keep a tie in your luggage. (I prefer
cotton or wool clothes for the plane and travel)

2.) Pack 3 days worth of walking around wear, 1 extra pair of shoes
(trainers), maybe one pair of shorts. I never wear shorts in Europe
unless it's a swim suit.

3.) Pack crushable rain gear, at least a coat. I've got an LL Bean
Gore-Tex coat that packs small, but is big enough to cover even a
backpack.

Last note - don't pack supplies like you're going into the jungle. By
packing as little as possible you'll have an excuse to go out and buy
toothpaste, laundry detergent, etc This is usually half the fun!
