My father was a freelance journalist for On Track and Autoweek for
many years (following his becoming burned out on programming)... Arley
Dealey ... He's gone back to IT now -- he got an MCSE from SMU and is
a network admin for a company in Michigan now... but then when he's
out of work, he's got to convince an IT hiring manager that he's still
a viable employee in his 50's. He's always said he was never as
artistic as I turned out to be -- said he looked at HTML once and
decided it wasn't for him because it was all about display. He told me
he was invited to speak at a conference once when he was younger and
was dumb and bailed on it. It's kind of strange because I've really
never had a relationship with my dad -- and now that I'm older I'm
finding that I'm a lot like him (or am becoming a lot like him) in
spite of the fact that we've never figured out how to be comfortable
talking to each other. Though now I'm discovering that I apparently
had some preconceived notions about the years he spent programming
when I was younger. Now I'm way off of nascar... :) Last Christmas I
got him a copy of an Indi-car board game... not Nascar, I know, but
it's hard to find cross-market merchandising for Nascar. :)
