You know, to riff on MikeD's idea about government experiments into pyschics - what if the government build the facility to _hold_ psychics. Psychics who were so powerful, they needed to be locked away for the world's safety. They give them a nice apartment, food, water,etc, but they are quarantined in the bunker. However, they are so powerful, their powers can actually 'leak' out and affect the Island.
In fact - remember how the black smoke tried to drag Locke down? Remember how Locke said he didn't think he would be harmed? Maybe it's a subconcious thing - the psychics are lonely so they drag people to them. Maybe there are multiple hatches on the island with multiple, super powerful psychics. Their power lets the other people on island see visons of people they know. Etc etc. (I need my coffee.)
