OK, I've made a decision to go for a PhD in Computer Science at the local
university (UNC-Charlotte). It's something I've always wanted to do,
considering that I've been heavily influenced by my mother's family to do so
- I have a couple of uncles who have theirs and are very well respected in
their particular academic disciplines.

Incidentally, my uncle (Carl T. Wild) was featured in this month's
"Business Week" magazine - I think it was page 50 - there's a picture of him
standing in the center of the page - here's a link but there's no pic -

My father-in-law also has a PhD in education, but I consider his
intelligence to be average at best, so I figure if he can do it, anyone can.

I'm excited about this, but as I start looking on the internet for resources
and information about getting the PhD, it makes me more and more scared as I
realize the amount of work that this could take and how so many people
apparently don't work full-time jobs as they work on their degree.

>From my time on the list, I think Larry is a PhD/ABD. Is there anyone else
here who's worked on a Doctoral degree? What comments do you have about
your time doing so? Is it worth it?

I know that you're supposed to have a long-range goal when approaching an
advanced degree - mine is ultimately to teach CS or business at the college
level (I already have an MBA).
