Hi brobborb,

I think that's a good enough package for a beginner. Not too much invested in
case the fascination wears off quickly.
I know you can get that same type of package (for the same/lower $$$) at a
local Sam Ash/Guitar Center, so you may want to just pick it up there. Plus
they may set it up for you, show you how to string it, share tips, etc... Just
a thought.

I think you'll find if you stick with it, you'll want to invest in a better
guitar. There really is quite a difference.
It's similar to someone saying "I want to learn ColdFusion" and going out and
getting a 486DX with Windows 98 (which would barely run it). Can learning CF
be done on this machine? Sure. Would it be fun? Probably not.
Do you need a P4 3.6Ghz w/ 2Gb of RAM? No. But you probably get my drift.

And just to touch upon what Jeffry Houser was saying about being self-taught.
I am for the most part self taught (I took about 8 weeks of lessons when I was
15 or so). AND I'm glad I did, it helped show me some of the ropes in getting
started that I don't think I couldva gotten outta of a book/magazine.
I wasn't trying to be discouraging about the lessons, I think they're a great
thing. If you think you can self-teach yourself, then by all means GO FOR IT!
I'm 31, and I'm going to start taking some lessons again (when I can find the
time) because you can never stop learning.

As far magazines/book/dvds, I have a butt-load of each. I can say without a
doubt that the UK magazines are way better than the US magazines.
US Magazines: Guitar World and Guitar One (these are the big 2)
UK Magazines: Guitar Techniques and Total Guitar (big 2 again)
ironically same publisher (Future Networks)

The UK magazines come with a CD w/ all backing tracks for the songs/lessons.
The US mags are starting to come out with CD's, but they're not as good as the
UK's.
The UK mag's are more expensive in the USA (about 12.99/issue) and you can find
them at pretty much any B&N or Borders.

I tend to like Guitar Techniques b/c they do more classic rock/blues, where as
Total Guitar tends to focus on newer groups that I'm not too into.

Best of luck and let us know how things are going,
Brian
