*Balloon lands near Thunder Bay

A couple of hot air balloonists from New Mexico could be in the running for
first prize in a distance contest after setting down in Northwestern
Ontario.

They landed last night near Raith, a community west of Thunder Bay and about
3,000 km from Albuquerque.

"Just before dark, they set it down on a logging road west of Thunder Bay,"
said OPP spokesman Sgt. Hal Lewis. "They have a satellite phone, so they
called Albuquerque and Albuquerque called us."

Lewis said an officer and a cadet were sent to pick up the two men and bring
them to Thunder Bay.

The balloonists had a global positioning system aboard and relayed the
co-ordinates to a police emergency response team member, who punched the
information into his computer.

The emergency response officer then passed on the data to the officer and
cadet.

The pair is believed to have been participating in the Balloon Fiesta
America's ChallengeĀ—a distance race for gas balloons.

The team that achieves the greatest distance from the starting point is
named the winner.

Lewis said the balloon wasn't damaged and police probably would drive the
two men back to their craft after they've had a meal and a good night's
sleep.
