They have a great way of dealing with this phenomenon in the NFL, especially with the highly paid, highly touted skill players. It usually happens on the first day of training camp (or the first day that said rookie reports to camp), and it goes something like this. I'll use a wide receiver as an example.
Stud rookie receiver goes out for a pass, maybe a hook or out pattern. Rookie catches the ball and promptly gets levelled by the biggest baddest linebacker or safety on the team, who says, "Welcome to the NFL, rookie." Your new kid might be really good where he comes from, but in the professional world, he's just a rookie. The standard of excellence in the professional world is set by experienced people who can run circles around this kid. He needs to understand that. He also needs to be encouraged. No one learns just by getting a beat-down. So show him the tools you use, the methodologies, and spend some time talking with him about what it takes to be great. If you are supposed to be his mentor, be his mentor. If he doesn't respect your role as mentor, that's a separate story and you may want to repeat the "Welcome to the NFL" treatment. >So we just hired this new "kid" - he's really really green, but we need >a lackeyboy to get some of the mundane html stuff done that is backing >up so that the developers can concentrate on applications that we have >here. Anyways, he's done a little bit of php programming, etc while >keeping up some servers for his friends. He's big into the open-source >thing, which is cool, but he's never held a "real" job in the IT field >whatsoever. In fact, I'd be surprised if he's ever held a job anywhere >- period. He just turned 21, BTW. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~| Find out how CFTicket can increase your company's customer support efficiency by 100% http://www.houseoffusion.com/banners/view.cfm?bannerid=49 Message: http://www.houseoffusion.com/lists.cfm/link=i:5:176023 Archives: http://www.houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/threads.cfm/5 Subscription: http://www.houseoffusion.com/lists.cfm/link=s:5 Unsubscribe: http://www.houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/unsubscribe.cfm?user=11502.10531.5 Donations & Support: http://www.houseoffusion.com/tiny.cfm/54
