Corporations should encourage 1-2 year sabbaticals for working professionals to rotate into teaching positions and the requirements to become a teacher should be dropped. Instead you'd offer an OJT program and, given a board of teachers approved someone, they would be able to teach.
This may work at post-secondary and secondary levels. But, I'm not sure how a being a lawyer, accountant or secretary is going to prepare one to teach 2nd graders reading, writing and math. That is a skill onto itself, and I doubt is learned in a corporate environment. I agree that teachers are underpaid, not sure how to fix that. Not sure what to do about bad teachers. Not sure what to do about poor schools. Not sure letting market forces dictate supply and demand works well here. A good school can only accept a finite number of students. What do all the parents do when they could not afford to take the week off in order to camp in front of the school to gain admittance? Not send their kids to school, or go back to the underperforming school, thus giving them students. As to charter schools and the like, they are proving to not necessarily be the solution. It is true that pilot programs are often spectacularly successful. They people behind the pilot are highly motivated. But once the program is expanded, many of the problems of the public schools begin to creep in. And their have been some disastrous failures the last few years. -------------- Ian Skinner Web Programmer BloodSource www.BloodSource.org Sacramento, CA "C code. C code run. Run code run.
