I don't think they seceded exactly. I think some units from each side got
lost and encountered each other here. There were a couple of battles, but
the only ones I can think of (Glorietta and Albuquerque) were pretty small
and are mainly curiosities noted with historical markers.
 While it is true that Virginia doesn't have alligators, and yes, there are
scorpions in parts of Texas, you're really quibbling. New Mexico has almost
nothing in common with Florida or Lousiana except that most people in each
place speak English.
 Texas is a special case. West Texas looks a lot like eastern New Mexico and
East Texas looks a lot like Louisiana, complete with alligators and po boys.
Texarkana looks a lot like Arkansas and Laredo and Nuevo Laredo also look a
lot alike. It's a huge state ;)
