In these kinds of debates, I always start with a textbook definition of both terms, then go from there. The first definition given for "cult" contains the line: "A religion or religious sect generally considered to be extremist or false".
This kind of ruined the debate before it ever got started for me. If you believe that Christianity is false, then you might consider it's denominations to be "cults". Likewise, if you are a moderate christian, you may consider some of the stricter denominations to be cults. It's a difficult discussion because it's so subjective, and interpretative. One person's religion is another's cult, and vice versa. Christianity was once a cult, and is now generally considered a religion. Conversely, some religions have devolved into nothing more than cults.
