Well - a movie like that doesn't absolutely need to be a blockbuster to be successful. If the (larger) revenues of DVD and overseas sales are good enough they can ensure a sequel all by themselves (this happened, I believe with "Austin Powers" which had a disappointing theatrical release). I'm not sure what the production cost of the movie was but I know it was rather small as special-effect blow-outs run. If it makes its money back and then some then the chances for a sequel are good, I think.
