Ah... but if you COULD have a do-over you would, wouldn't you? When given the option to rectify mistakes in our lives we tend to take them. The hope is that they will teach us not to make the same mistakes again. Abortion is a particularly nasty lesson in that sense. Let's remember that abortion is not a painless, "in-and-out" process as some would have us believe. It's physically, mentally, socially and in all other ways tremendously traumatic. Not to allow it however would be punishment, pure and simple, not education. You're saying "you've made your bed now lie in it." Now while you may agree with the philosophy it's hard to see how that provides any education. > I don't see how anyone wouldn't agree with that. There are two different ideas here. Society should not encourage irresponsibility, of course. However that should not naturally lead to the removal of options for those who make mistakes. Education should always be a primary focus. Education has the potential to greatly reduce or eliminate many social ills. Also the more education we have the less magical thinking we have applied to social issues and that's only for the best in my opinion. However the simple fact is that we, as a species are instinctually driven towards sex. The drive towards procreation is strong, as strong as eating or sleeping or anything else. However like many of our primitive instincts this need is much less urgent in the modern world. It fits in poorly and isn't as necessary an urge as it once was. We are also, unfortunately perhaps, the only species that fully (or at least potentially) understands the ramifications of our actions. We know when we're pregnant, we know what that means and we have (in all stages of history) invented various means to stop or prevent it. To bring the whole point down to a rarified moral question while forgetting the biological and social drivers doesn't create a workable solution. Beat ignorance and you beat the majority of abortions. I can agree with that wholeheartedly in theory. But again it's not just ignorance. Its biology, it's "love" (unless you don't think the line "if you loved me you'd do it" never worked on any intelligent, but insecure woman), and a whole host of other issues. To ignore those issues is to climb a pedestal and rail at the skies. Yes, you're above everybody else and yes, it would be nice if you were right, but it doesn't actually do anything to solve the problem.
