I am in need of a new top for my '86 Corvette. I can get a new top for
about $270, but the guy who sells the tops strongly recommended I take
it to an upholsterer that specializes in car interiors and convertibles.

If you need to get the entire frame, you probably would want someone
else to adjust it to fit your car. It can be very easy for the pins to
get out of alignment from front to back. However, if you are
mechanically-inclined, it may not be that difficult of a job.

I, on the other hand, would not consider installing the soft cover on
the frame. I'm afraid I would tear it or get it in a bind when the top
is either folded or raised.

Then again, I probably had the top raised only about a dozen times since
spring. It will take one helluva rain storm for me to raise the top.
As much as it leaks, I stay drier when the top is down. ;-) That makes
it harder for me to justify a new top for that car.
