Thank you so very much for both the simple answer and the details to
back it up. You are the man!

Just for giggles I will provide you with Adobe's responses to:

"I would like to know how many people use or download Adobe Reader. It
can be a number or a percentage of Internet users. For example if you go
to the Macromedia website (the company you just gobbled up) they proudly
display that 97% of internet users have Flash player loaded on their
computer. I can't find a number like that on the Adobe site so I was
hoping you could help me. I am trying to sell someone on using PDFs but
they keep pushing back fearing not enough people have the ability to
view them."

Person #1. I have no way of knowing that.

Person #2. Tons!!

Person #3. I don't know.
(Ken) Macromedia proudly displays that 97% of Internet
users have Flash isn't there someone who can tell me how many people use
Adobe Reader?
                (Adobe rep) No
(Ken) Gimme a break, can't you transfer me to a manager
or the PR department or someone who knows usage statistics for your
products. Just transfer me to a manager.
                (Adobe rep) click! Dial tone.....

Person #4. (Adobe rep)We don't keep those kind of numbers.
(Ken) Ah come on someone in an office with no windows in
marketing or PR has to know how many people use Adobe Reader. If you go
to the macromedia site they proudly display something like 97% of
Internet users have installed Flash Player.
(Adobe) Well Adobe Reader is a free product so we don't
keep those kind of numbers. Flash Player is a purchased product so they
can keep registration records.
(Ken) Er.. eh.. NO, Flash Player is free. I imagine
Macromedia keeps track of the number of downloads, that wouldn't be
hard. Then they probably extrapolate the number using the number of
downloads and some other factors.
(Adobe rep) Well then Macromedia probably just makes up
that number of 97%.
(Ken) Nice! I see Adobe thinks highly of the company
they just gobbled up.
(Adobe rep) {laugh} Well no its not like that.
(Ken) If I was to call 411 in San Jose I could get a corporate
number for Adobe and then hope to get a hold of someone from PR or
Marketing. Might you be able to get that number for me.
