Remember that its not really Disney sponsored - they're just the distributor and translater. I think that in general Disney has done a good job with the Myazaki films, but from what I remember reading they had no real choice. Myazaki was so pissed off with the original Naussica translation (google Warriors of the Wind - I think that what it was called) that when Disney approached him he had a bunch of conditions including he had full artistic and translation control. The quality of it shows.
Other Myazaki films to look at, Naussica and Porco Rosso - two of my favourites.
