In my own experience, yes. I used to be involved in martial arts and combat training. While I was doing it I also found myself in situations where it came in handy. Strangely, in well over a decade since I stopped I also haven't ever been in a situation where it was needed much less handy. Simply put, I don't get into fights or even feel threatened now that I've stopped training for it.
