This kind of thing can even happen with relatively 'local' online dating. I have a girlfriend who met a guy on a dating site... talked to him for about a month and were really falling for each other.
Turns out the guy was married, created an 'alternate personality' and did a similar thing... killed himself off (with cancer) when it was no longer really possible to 'put off' meeting in person. She would still think he's dead if it hadn't been for a screw up on his part... turns out I knew the 'real him' and had been doing contract work for him...
