Which brings us back to the beginning. Civil unions should give gays
equal rights to marriage.

I think they should have the same rights as a heterosexual couple has:
be called a family, call each other mom, dad, son or daughter. Share
the same family name.  I just don't see why defining it as a marriage
is a right.
