Yeah... exactly.

Even if the doctors did the surgery for free, could the hospital?  How about
the hospital suppliers?  Somebody, eventually, will be picking up the
costs... who?  My guess is that the article is simplifying the situation by
placing all of the responsibility on the doctors.

Of course the cost for surgery to help this one girl could probably cover
Malaria or TB medication to save the lives of hundreds.  What about simple
preventative procedures which might eliminate hospital stays or extend the
lives of many others?

So, if we're going to consider giving away tens of thousands of dollars of
free medical care should it actually go to this kid?  It's not an easy
question but there are people that have to answer it. 

Really, where do you draw the line?  Do we only give free medical care to
those whose illnesses are emotionally captivating and make for good TV?
Facial Tumor?  Yes!  Siamese Twins?  Yes!  Dysentery?  No.  TB?  No.

Makes you long for universal healthcare, uh?
