You can lend the physical media to a friend, but you cannot make a
copy for yourself (tape, mp3, backup cd) and then lend it to a friend
(keeping one for yourself).

And the friend cannot make a copy while they are borrowing it.

Of course, I have a similar problem. A lot of my CDs are marked with
"not for resale", even though I bought them used at record stores
(like Strawberries) and at garage sales.

I am not sure exactly what the legal status of those is.
