I still feel as though the market is manipulated. Oil companies do what
they can to create hype to fuel a speculative market in order to build
up artificially high prices.

It isn't manipulation, it is speculation.

The cost of oil is set by the market based on supply and demand. The
various
stations and the government add in their fees. The Refineries add in
their
fees and the circle of life is allowed to continue.

A week or so ago I complained that gas went from 2.04 up to 2.25 in one
day.
Turns out that was the same day an Anwar drilling bill was voted down in
the
house. Of course a week later the gas is back down, and the prices are
falling.

They aren't going to drop the price, then it looks like they were price
gouging to begin with. They may have been price gouging, I don't know,
but
the stations don't want to make it look that way.

Here the gas prices are very interesting. A Speedway right next to a
Shell
can have roughly 10 cents between the price.

The highest gas around here is by far the individually owned stations.
Most
Marathons here are independently owned. Saturday a Marathon station had
gas
at 2.34 for regular, while the Speedway, Shell and BP stations were
around
2.00 a gallon.

Pretty interesting, I've heard some people on this list comment that the
chains are the ones that keep the gas price higher, I'm not so sure
about
that here.
