it wasn't a friend it was his editor. Who may also be a friend, mind
you. I am not totally sure what the routine would be -- the Post gives
Woodward special handling -- but normally protect your source does not
include from your editors also. I know the only time I ever had an
anonymous source the paper wanted to know who they were and why they
wanted to be anonymous. They risk getting sued after all.

As for the television appearances, again, he should have declined
comment. But he did not seek them out as I understand it... these were
regular gigs for him doing policy analysis. It might actually have
attracted more attention had he declined comment, since people would
wonder why. I am not excusing the ethical lapse but it seems
relatively minor and as a matter of strategy it actually makes some
sense.
