Yea - this T9 Word crap is awesome. I only learned about it a few months ago after having a phone for a loooong time. Typing stuff is very fast indeed.
As to why not just call? Sometimes a little note is more fun/appropriate. My girlfriend likes to txt me dirty little messages when she's in class and what not. > With the predictive text entry, it is -fast-.
