But even Snopes agrees that the differences between the two could be
interpreted that way!

As for Kong getting whipped: In the movies they added the (REALLY weird)
caveat that King Kong gets "powered up" by lightning.  So we start with Kong
getting his hairy ass kicked, but then, lo and behold, a lightning storm
comes in and Kong puts the beat-down on Godzilla's scaly ass.

But even without that they took the big license of completely changing the
size of the characters.  Kong, in the original film was perhaps 30 feet
tall.  In most Godzilla movies Godzilla is at least 500 feet tall (although
this varies with the models - but in several scenes we see Godzilla towering
over cityscapes).

So it'd be kind of like a Chihuahua attacking a Komodo dragon.  ;^)

No - neither one was a "good" movie, but they were both fun as a 7-year old.
