Liquor, at least in Virginia is controlled by the state, you have to go to ABC (Alcoholic Beverage Control) Store to pick up any type of Liquor. Beer and wine on the other hand can be picked up at the local grocery store.
Depending on the state, there's either light control like Va or tighter controls like MD or Delaware, which require that all alcohol be sold in liquor stores. I was in Niagara Falls last March, the one "beer store" we went into was a scary and expensive place.... just wanted a case of Molson to take back :( And no Moosehead anywhere... Total Beverage (now Total Wine) is nothing but beer, wine a small soda/water section and a small cigar section. It's the only place to find a lot of the hard to find micros and foreign beers that can't be found at the local Safeway. Scott A.
