I know why for me (these are my perceptions of course):

1.) America has a culture of work. Go to any dinner party in America
and the first question you get is, "what do you do?". If you work
less than 60 hours per week you're not working hard enough. Children
usually seem like a burden for most people (how many people take their
kids on vacation with them?) If you get 3 weeks off per year you're
lucky and when you get back from vacation you're bombed with backed up
work. "stay at home" parents are pariahs while a
double-income-new-BMW family is respected.

2.) Cultural Regression. I feel like we're in a Jesus-land regression
that has citizens thinking the government's role is to teach values.
The gov't has no such role in my world. It exists to protect rights,
period.

3.) Rampant consumerism. Stuff is great, but I'm starting to feel
like consumption is out of control here. We try to save a significant
portion of our income - the rest of America seems happy with 0% or
less.

For me, Europe, specifically Benelux and France but southern Germany
and parts of Italy too, is *really* relaxing. Life is focused on
family and freetime and that's something I like.

The only places in America I've found that match that are Wisconsin,
parts of Oregon, and parts of the East Coast like Vermont.
