I'm more than a bit skeptical of this - given that almost the same
thing was circulating in the 80's and early 90's. Moreover the
complaints about the M-16 and praise of the M-14 is almost word for
word stuff that was written in the late 60's. I suspect that the
writer was talking of his own Vietnam experience than that of modern
soldiers. Before it was that M-16's jammed in the rain and mud of
Vietnam, now its they jam in the dust of Iraq. And in 20 years,
assuming the same model of infantry rifle is still used, this writer,
or his intellectual heirs, will be complaining that the M-16 jams in
the snow of Siberia.

Actually I wouldn't be surprised if during the Roman empire many of
the same complaints were made, spathas jammed frequently, everyone
tries to get their hands on the old broad daggers rather than the
modern stillettos etc.
