"What Do You Do" is a standard question taught to start a conversation. You will find this anywhere in the world.
It tells you immediately the position of the individual, gives you an idea as to their status and possible wealth, and thus whether they are worth talking to or not, or simply gives you a ready topic of conversation to continue talking.
