Well, you don't hear about these consultants because companies that
hire them usually don't want you or The Street to know. And these
consultants usually leave their firms to Fortune 500 strategy groups
or executive management (as well as VCs, PEGs, lobby groups, or start
businesses).

So, at that level, the business world does work like that. (Only a
small percentage make partner or want it). And these consultancies
touch many businesses.

As an example, if you use a Dell then you've been touched by Bain.
Bain was hired to determine the strategy of Dell from the beginning
and the current CEO is a former Bain partner that was hired away by
Mr. Dell (which is really common).

(A funnier example is WalMart. The recent memo suggesting WalMart get
rid of fat people to lower medical costs was a recommendation memo
from a McKinsey partner! Oops. Jeff Skilling of Enron fame was also
a former McKinsey partner. And McKinsey did the consulting for
United, Sabena, and SwissAir all of whom promptly went bankrupt. But,
for some reason, they're still #1)

The point being that this culture exists at just about any Fortune 500
company, but at the strategy and executive level. The hiring
practices for those groups are very similar to The Apprentice except
on The Apprentice Mr Trump runs the cases himself whereas in the
business world that work is outsourced to consultancies.

It's *definitely* not for everyone, but there are plenty of rewards.
