I think this isn't so much about economics or environmentalism as is
has to do with who you choose to be friends with and whether or not
they are willing and able to put aside their own personal views and
respect yours in order to be friends.

If a friend suddenly started giving me crap about converting to their
religion or political party, I would probably stop hanging out with
them, however I have plenty of friends with religious or political
views that are in opposition to my own.

It's one thing to encourage your friends to be environmentally
friendly, and it's a whole other one to be a eco-snob who's a jerk
about it.
