Oh, it can definitely be done.  Sometimes better.  I had a buddy that
had bought his own car back from the insurance company after they
"totaled" it.  He had actually totaled it, but anyway.  Eventually it
had the baldest tires you've ever seen.

Well during one brutal snow storm he let 1/2 the air out of the tires
and we blasted up this hill that had stuck SUVs on it.  And it only
had front wheel drive.  So yeah, anything's possible.

BTW, this car was a Toyota Corona that had been in a head-on
collision.  Somehow the engine and drivetrain were able to be repaired
although it had a few problems:

* Much of the paint had been ground off so he spray painted it flat
black with flames.

* The front seats had been stolen, but this guy was 6'5" so he could
use throw pillows and rest against the back seats.

* The gas tank and fuel pump were beyond repair so he bolted an old
paint can to the hood and gravity fed fuel to the engine.

* There was no heater so he used a Mr. Heater portable heater.

And this car outperformed 4WDs in the winter.
