Rats make GREAT pets. I had a great rat when I got my first apartment. He died suddenly one night as well - the vet said it might have something to do with the litter I was using (some litters have "clumping agents" even if they're not clumping liters and in small animals the dust can get into the lining of lungs and suffocate them). I was never sure that this was case, but he seemed perfectly healthy the day before. Buried in a tree pit outside the apartment on Beacon Hill (which is technically illegal I think so don't tell!)
