When I was a kid, we had both cats and a dog. One time, one of the other neighborhood dogs cornered the cat. My dog trotted up and nipped him on the tail. The other dog spun around to see what bit him. My cat took the opportunity to jump on his back and rode him across the yard, hissing and spitting, just like you described. It was frickin' hilarious!
