Which Dictionary?

You know, that the dictionary actually has the definition: A large extent, 
amount, or number. Often used in the plural: is in a lot of trouble; has 
lots of friends. 

Above the defintion:  A piece of land used for a given purpose: a parking 
lot. 

So, I think you've lost the battle, and I'd say that "a lot" of people have 
used "a lot" in an informal way so much that it's now an acceptable 
standard.
