The stuff on dictionary.com comes from the American Heritage dictionary of
Idioms. Idioms are very interesting.

That was just dictionary.com.  OED still has them listed the other way, but 
even OED lists "A considerable number, quantity, or amount; a good deal, a 
great deal" as a valid (though colloquial) definition.
