I'm not sure about the progression but I know he was a devote Christian.
The "Narnia" books make several references to biblical "truths" but remain
fantasies.

There are a lot of parallels between his books and biblical stories (the
sacrifice of Aslan for Edmund's sins being one of the most obvious) but he
also included non-fundamentalist beliefs like Father Christmas.  There have
been many, many volumes written on the topic both from a pro-religious and
an anti-religious standpoint.

Personally I don't think he was trying to "sneak" religion into the
stories... I think he just really liked the world he created.
