American:

Death: (very complex musically, lyrically political and somewhat
introspective) guitarist Chuck Schuldner (r.i.p.) was considered to be one
of the godfathers of modern death metal

Nile: detuned guitars w/keyboards very heavy, deals mostly with ancient
Egyptian themes

Deceased: old school blast beat death, DC locals made good.

World Wide:

Opeth: this is one of my favorites, heavy spooky atmospheric music, mix of
clean and death vocals. Lyrically they touch on "otherwordly" subjects
without diving off the deep end into satanic lyrics (this is the big turn
off for me when it comes to death bands, the Satanism schtick is so tired
and old).

Mercenary: Mix of clean and "deathy (the guy can scream in key?)" vocals
over detuned heavy music, this is also a favorite.

Obituary: Can't comment on the lyrics, 'cause I can't understand a word he
says, death vocals with a heavy Swedish accent are unintelligible. Fantastic
musicianship makes up for it.

Arch Enemy, death metal with a female singer/growler

Into Eternity, from Jillian's neck of the Great White North. Complex fast
heavy music, with clean and death vocals and vocal harmonies. Again,
incredible musicians.

There are a slew of hokey death metal bands that write simplistic 100,000MPH

Songs with either gore based or satanic based lyrics, pretty lame for the
most part

I see I started something. These three bands are ok but not for this
purpose. A) must annoy sister B) Must be American, it's my responsibility as
the evil expatriate aunt to infect these kids with American cooties doncha
know, and Coldplay is definitely British. C) Above all, must be something
not on the radio in Ottawa, and some of these might have made the soft-rock
station. I dunno about Sakatoon, Jill, but it Ottawa there are the French
stations, the top-40 stations, a college station and possibly a soft-rock
station. I *know* nobody was playing Eminem, for example.

I'm looking for something more like the latest hip-hip, or yes, possibly
death metal. But GOOD, and I am not sure what that would be in those genres
as I mostly listen to alt-rock.

I am working my way through the rest of the responses. Thank you to everyone
who has given this some thought.

Dana
