I wouldn't say that your terminology is what I would deem to be correct.

If my roommate turns on his music after first asking me if I mind isn't 
'keeping up appearances'.

Now, if he were playing music that was a) offensive b) he knew I hated c) at a 
time when he knew I was trying to sleep or concentrate... that would be rude, 
but not really anything about keeping up appearances.
