Did you get a shorter bar after it was done healing?  That's kind of key.

Once in a blue moon I'll bit mine... but the balls are acrylic, so doesn't hurt 
or cause me any problems.

I brush mine twice a day when I brush my teeth... and never had any problems.  
I also change my jewellery out every day / every other day (and boil them to 
clean them)... to match what I'm wearing... so that may help too.
