well, as of a decade ago at least, the infinite universe was solid science. I remember that the conclusion of my astronomy topics class was that the Drake equation demonstrated that the probability of another life form was extremely small, yet when applied to an infinite universe meant that it could not be ruled out. Not to mention that when you get far enough into mathematics (I am thinking of differential equations here) the numbers don't matter any more, just the orders of magnitude. So you really to don't have to a mystic to be awed by the universe :) I remember seeing a movie once about the theory of limits. I know it sounds dry, but I dreamed about it for months. Woke up talking about it several times too, I was told.
