I'm not going to say that addictions are beyond the person's control -
if so then it would be impossible to break out of it. There's a
problem with cigarettes - they're about the most efficient drug
delivery device there is, outside of IV's that is. The nicotine goes
directly from the lungs to the brain. What this means is that the
success rates for quitting smoking are worse than heroin addiction.
Typically most research finds that about only 10% are successful in
quitting smoking using any one program.

That said, people can and do quit. It may not happen the first time
but if the person keeps trying eventually they'll quit. People don't
just make one try at quitting - most keep trying. Eventually they
succeed. That 10% is only for one attempt. For example, lets say
there's a group of 100 smokers. On the first attempt to quit, 10
succeed, but 90 do not. Attempt 2, 9 succeed and 81 do not. By the 9th
or 10th attempt, most have quit.
