I attended a java quick-start seminar at a local contracting company a
couple of years ago. I was also amazed at how much work is required to
produce simple out put. When I showed the instructor how it could be
done in CF, they were also surprised.

Of course, the java people considered CF just a toy since it took only
seconds to create a quick query page.

We use an AS400 with Websphere for our current, soon-to-be-replaced,
student system. No one at our university has any clue about the
development, so we are forced, for the time being, to rely on our
contractor. I would estimate the amount spent to be around $2 million+
for such a crappy system. Only after a couple of years, was it decided
to scrap it for a packaged student system.

Here is the biggest problem with our old system. The contractor decided
to break all that is good with a web browser and just turn the web
application into a green screen terminal. It is sickening.

Good luck to you with Websphere. You need to convince your company to
use CF on top of Websphere. ;)

Subject: Anybody else dealing with RAD 6 or IBM Portal Development?

I'm in class this week (which is why I'm quiet all day then spam the
list when I get home at night). I'm learning "WebSphere Portal 5.1
development with RAD 6".

Now the class expects quite a bit of basic Java knowledge (which I don't
have) but I think I'm keeping up okay. Just wondering if anybody is
dealing with this stuff.

I'm constantly amazed about COMPLICATED this stuff is: to do a "hello
world"
portlet "the right way" you're talking like 5 or six separate files!
RAD 6 (based on Eclipse 3) is okay (not great) but OH SO SLOW AND BIG
(the install of everything - RAD 6, WebSphere developer edition and
Portal tools - is in the 3 gigabytes range - upwards of 18 CDs).

If I stay at the company I'm with I'll be moving away from CF towards
this stuff - does it ever get simpler?
