Well... what about... um... alien technology! Yeah - that's it! ;^) Perhaps the "magnetic rock" is really a meteorite a la "Smilla's Sense of Snow" (or that "The X-Files" episode that definitely wasn't a rip-off of "Smilla's Sense of Snow")? Also there's really no reason that it has to be artificial life - you can have the same basic ideas with colonies of genetically modified bacteria. Or a mixture: a group of psychics who "melded" or "forced the evolution" of cultured bacteria until it obtained its own psychic abilities! Lot's of possibilities. But I really think they're moving beyond the point where any "simple" explanation could ever cover everything. Pretty soon I think they'll get just so much weirdness that it will really have to be explained by some virtual reality/psychic reality situation. I don't know...
