It really depends upon the airport. I most times I fly out of National, I
always wind up with the same 22 year old kid with a chip on his shoulder. I
practically had to strip the last time. I was wearing a hooded sweatshirt,
he made me take the damn thing off right there and run it through the metal
detectors, along with taking my shoes off.

Fortunately I was wearing a t-shirt underneath but I still looked pretty
stupid walking through security in my socks and a wife-beater.

Given what they've been paying, at least around here, I think it boils
down to you pay shit you get the same.

As an aside, the last time we went through security we were treated
really well, very polite, and fast. They were even apologetic about
searching us with the scanner want. Of course it probaby helped that
we had Alexis with us who was determined to out cute the world. ;)

Seriously though, even though I don't travel by air a lot, it doesn't
seem too much to go through your pockets and get rid of stuff like
that. Moreover the airports have plenty of signs and notices giving
ample warning. So even if you've forgotten you do have the opportunity
to mail it to your destination or wherever.
